Forgive the alliteration, but just as V is for Venice, so V is also for Valentino - you know, the legendary haute couture designer. And V is for Volare too - yes, the corny old pop tune. And in their very different ways, Valentino and Volare have dominated life here on the Lido in the first few days of the Venice Film Festival.

Valentino, who recently retired as the head of the Italian fashion house that bears his name after a stunningly successful 45-year reign, is here to help promote a documentary about him, directed by Vanity Fair journalist Matt Tyrnauer. And very entertaining it is too - it's a fly-on-the-wall glimpse behind the scenes that shows how the great man designs his gowns, often rides roughshod over his respectful employees, and throws the occasional tantrum with his long-time professional and personal partner, Giancarlo Giammetti.

Still, it's only a low-budget documentary, one that has not yet secured a release date in most countries. So it has been staggering to observe how Valentino, by his very presence here, has effectively been taking over the festival, stealing it for a day from under the noses of established film stars.

Everywhere he goes, this dapper little man, in his mid-70s and with a leathery tan, gets cheered and screamed at by fans, just like a movie idol. In Italy he is an icon - for once, no other word will do. 'Him and the Pope,' an Italian journalist remarked to me with an expressive shrug.

After the first day of the festival, one might have expected all the headlines in the Italian press to be dominated by George Clooney and Brad Pitt, who were both in town as stars of the festival's opening film, the Coen Brothers' Burn After Reading. But no - Valentino was the big story.

It's a sign of the reverence he enjoys in Italy. Yet he has also managed to maintain an extraordinary degree of privacy. Tyrnauer told me he first met Valentino when he wrote a lengthy magazine article about the designer and Giammetti. "When it was published, the headline 'Valentino is gay' ran in ten major Italian newspapers," Tyrnauer recalled. Hard to believe an entire nation hadn't worked out that simple fact.
 
That's Valentino, so how about Volare? Well, the song is played over loudspeakers near the festival headquarters all the time. Remember how it goes? "Volare, whoah-ho, Cantare, whoah-ho-ho-ho." It's a 1950s Italian tune, made famous in the States by Dean Martin and Bobby Rydell. 

The reason it's being played non-stop here is that there's a retrospective of old favourite Italian films in the festival, such as Bicycle Thieves.

One of them is a 50 year old film called Nel Blu, dipinto di Blu, which is the second line of Volare, and means 'in the sky of blue.' 

Now the thing about Volare is that you only have to hear it and you want to sing along. Especially, it seems, if you're Italian. I've noticed dozens of locals stroll past the loudspeakers, and immediately join in with the 'whoah-hos.'

This morning, I walked past myself, and guess what was playing? A large middle-aged Italian man was walking towards me, and dutifully began singing "Volare, whoah-ho," extending his arms with an exaggerated flourish, and giving me a wide grin.

What could I do? I responded: "Cantare, whoah-ho-ho-ho." He looked delighted, applauded and gave me a friendly hug before we both burst into laughter. For a few seconds we were instant pals.

The power of music, eh?

Well it has finally arrived, time to head off to Willy Nilly on the Wash !!!  With season passes in hand we wait with anticipation for the firing of the opening cannon. For those who dont know , we have a new Queen Elizabeth this year, our friend Erin Riddle!!  Can't wait to see you all there!

Our plucky PR intern, Gerald Hom, just discovered that totally bootleg Street Fighter IV cabinets are lurking in the darkened bowels of the San Jose State University Student Union. Gerald helpfully took a buncha pics of the machines in question, so check out his blog if yer interested in seeing more SFIV grey market shenanigans.

Man, a million years ago I spent a whole lot of time down in this particular arcade -- it was filled with then-recent Capcom hits like Black Tiger, Mercs and Forgotten Worlds (my sixth favorite Capcom game!). The arcade was quite possibly the best thing about going to school at SJSU -- until I was old enough to get into the on-campus pub, that is.

So who else is sper excited for the 3 day weekend? Well we sure are!!!!!

On Labor Day we are throwing our son his 1rst birthday party. It's hard to believe he is 1 all ready. I feel like yesterday we brought him home from the hospital. He id dfinitely more fun now. Walking, talking, and has more personality then both Kyle and I combined.

Kyle has been a big help putting everything together. I know he didn't want things to turn out asbig as they are but he lets me go crazy every once and a while. He is so cute. Last night he was cleaning our son's room and putting things on the walls. He tries so hard to care about the little things. I couldn't do anything without him.

It reminds me of when we first brought our son home. Iwas so tired for a long and painful labor. Kyle was so concerned about me. He did everything to makme happy and comfortable. While everyone was fawning over our new son he was fawning over me. But that's how it is with Kyle. He always puts me first. He would wake up everytime our son woke up and change him then pass him to me to feed him. That way he was in it with me and understood how tired I was all the time. He didn't want me to feel like I was alone in anything. But kyle is like that. He knew  would happily let him sleep but he would wake up anyways.

I know that Kyle loves me more then anything.  It's a choice to love someone everyday and we definitely choose to love each othe unconditionally. We promised years ago to accept each other the way we are and t never try to change that or each other.

So I think we are the perfect couple. We have been through some hard times that would normally tear a couple apart but it made our bond that much more special. We can laugh and share with each other. We have no fear of each other and know we can tell each other anything with no judgement. I hope every couple out there finds what we have.

I'm still in the process of organizing my studio and at the same time we are trying to finish our whole house remodel...so far it has been a 2 year process. Removing flooring, installing tile, removing countertops, installing new zodiac space black counters (LOVE, LOVE them). We personally installed the Italian tumbled marble for the backsplash! We love how it turned out and we did a pretty darn good job.

Installing our kitchen island is our latest project. We had the guy out to measure for the counter top, today. I can't wait until that is finished. I've missed my island and the electricity for a work station. For two years I've had to use my side counters and they just are not the same! My hubby put in the electricity last weekend and I suppose I am waiting for the actual counter tops to be installed before I feel like it is done!

No team is as woven into the fabric of a city. The organization's stability has a lot to do with it, as generations of Steelers fans relate to the tradition of ownership (Rooneys), smashmouth football, quality head coaches (league-low three since 1969) and success (five Super Bowl titles). The season-ticket waiting list is extremely long and the consecutive sellout streak of 299 games, including playoffs, is unbelievable.

Women have changed over the years. They are more confident and liberated and of course they are no more chained to the kitchen sink or the nursery.

It is a long time since I was a mother of young children. I took my role seriously and gave up my career to bring them up.Though am very proud of how they have turned out,but \i cant help wondering at times if  I missed out on a llot.

Today`s young mothers have the freedom to chose career and parenthood.They have personal trainers who can come home and help them regain their figures,there are gyms which open all hours to facilitate easy access.

I have seen ther changes too, women today dress in a very skimpy clothes. They go on hen parties, nights out and just simply for "drinks" with their mates. I have never had such liberty or oppurtunities.Firstly because I came from an Asian culture,where such things were unthinkable, and secondly I just didnt  feel very comfortable inviting undue attention to my body.

But todays women dress as they wish, and not just in the West,but while I was in India last year,the capital city was awash with night clubs,pubs and women in micro minis and boob tubes. I found all the middle aged lamenting the demise of modesty. And the rise in attacks on females on attire.

I dont think it is as simple as that. I think women have fought for and have got a certain status in todays society. And they are flaunting it a bit in every way. In competing with careers and in doing as they please, and men..well they are at a loss, and in danger of becoming an oppressed minority!!!

So what do you think? Have what women have got today is their just desreves or have they gone over the top?

Are they having it all? Or was this due a long time?
